Titane, her Palme d’Or-winning breakthrough, is a feminist, body-horror action blast that hits with both force and originality. Her follow-up Alpha misses the mark entirely. A coming-of-age story is mixed with an overly explicit AIDS allegory – featuring a virus that turns its victims into marble statues that slowly crumble to dust – in a messy, manic, and overamped film that chases effects without ever truly delivering them. The central time structure is so confusing it risks going over the heads of much of the audience.”
